SuperBowl Weekend

It’s going to be an exciting weekend here in Washington State! Go Hawks!

So I’m ALREADY behind on my reading goal for this year. I blame Maplecroft. I started reading Maplecroft because I didn’t get it in time to read for my book club meeting but it’s just so dull. It has the potential to be intriguing and the story seems like it would be great but I just can’t get into it. I have the book for another month, then it goes back into my TBR pile. To encourage myself, I decide to dive into Night Myst by Yasmine Galenorn.

I’ve seen Yasmine Galenorn at book signings, a romance tea talk and at the Seattle Mystery Shop. The last time I saw her, one of my book club co-leaders and I talked to her about her series and we decided to start reading her Indigo Court series.  I’ve read one of her other series but my co-leader and I decide to start one of her series that is completed and only has 5 books. Since Night Myst is one that I need to read for my book club and since book club is next Friday, I figured I should start it. I started it and am almost finished with it, so a book review will be coming soon.

I think I said this before, but I’m sort of a bandwagon Seahawks fan. I generally don’t watch football games, unless I’m at my friend’s house who watches them all. I tend to watch 2 games a year, the Superbowl, if we are going and the Apple Cup. GO COUGS! The reason I’m bring this up again is because I just need to say how awesome it is to see local businesses and the community rocking the Seahawks colors and 12th man flags. I’m not sure if you’ve ever been part of something so inspiring and that evokes a sense of pride and joy, but it’s a great feeling. I wish more things brought communities together like this. I’m excited for the big game tomorrow and can’t wait to see the Seahawks crush it! Oh and I bought a dozen cookies from Sweet Themes Bakery and I’m super disappointed. I’ll never order off an order form again because what the form said and what I got are vastly different. I specifically choose the cookies that did NOT say square and that’s what I got. I complained to the owner and since they only had the footballs left, we switched out some of the cookies. Still angry that this would even happen.

I need a hug

It’s been a very stressful few weeks and my body is not handling it well. I’m craving comfort food, have migraines every few days and have been incredibly irritable. All I feel like doing is snuggling with my dog on my couch watching Netflix or punching someone in the face. This is not cool. I have tons of things I should be getting done. I have a couple of projects I have to work on and plenty of books to read. I just got 2 new books that I am dying to read but it seems like I’m slacking on time management. On top of everything, I yelled at a customer service person last night and now I feel guilty.

After yelling at the guy just doing his job, I needed something to do to release the pent-up stress and anger, so I cleaned my living room. My cleanliness has gone down the drain and if you ever want to make yourself feel better, clean your living space. Emotionally, I think the clean living room helped clear some of the pent up frustrations I’ve had for the last couple of weeks. I even finished the design part on a scarf I am making for a friend. See how pretty the Seattle skyline looks!

It’s important to feel good and not let stress eat away at your mental state. Everyone cops with stress differently and I think for me, it’s important to know what the signs of stress are. When I recognize those signs I should and need to do something, like cleaning, taking a shower, going for a walk or just getting up and out of the house. I’m still pretty irritable but I’m just hoping that will pass. I hope.

You read that right and no it’s not a typo. I almost failed my journalism class in college because of my lack of attention grabbing headlines! I have a hard time coming up with appropriate titles and headlines but that’s not the main reason I almost failed that class, but I digress. This weekend turned out to be very productive and awesome, for a lot of different reasons but mostly because this is how I kicked it off!

I spent most of the weekend getting ready for a party, cooking rice, taco meat, mexican brownies and cutting up all the veggies. My plan this weekend was to get out of the house at least once a day. If I don’t, I’ll just lay on the couch watching Netflix all weekend and that will make me feel horrible come Monday. Saturday was a no-brainer since I had to go to my friend’s house but Sunday, well I planned on sleeping in. I had some items to return from the party so that gave me a great reason to get dressed and head out into the world!

Have you ever returned groceries? It’s a pretty weird feeling walking back into the store with shopping bags. People look at you funny and you know they are silently judging you. After making all my returns I headed home for some relaxation and chilling with the dog. Got bored so I started reading Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness. This is book two, and I’ll do a book review soon but I’m excited to see what problems they cause in the past! To finish off the weekend I played a few hours of DragonAge Inquisition, LOVE this game.

Oh yeah, the Seahawks kicked the Panthers asses this last Saturday and at the end of the week, the Packers are coming to town. It was a great game and pretty sure Bam Bam Kam showed up to a track meet instead of a football game (hurdles and long distance running). Just as an FYI, I’m not a huge football fan and you can call me a bandwagon fan all you want, I just like supporting my hometown teams (except the Huskies). Who the F cares how long you have been a fan as long as you are one. Anyways my friend is a huge fan and I was worried the party I was throwing for her would be ruined if the Seahawks lost, good thing they didn’t.

A’s 30th Party

My friend takes her age pretty seriously and was feeling the grumps from turning 30 in December. I know woman think turning 30 is bad, I don’t get it but someone like my friend doesn’t feel that great about it. To help cheer her up I planned a Fiesta Bday party for her and friends. Hence the fiesta in a cart picture above. My idea was to let the emotional burn of turning 30 cool down a little before we celebrated her big day. It’s really hard to have a birthday party at the end of December so, January works just fine. I’d started planning this at the end on November and the day I picked just happened to be set as the first playoff game for the Seahawks. Not as many people showed up as we had hoped due to football parties and the game but we still had a blast. I do have leftover taco meat that will last me a month, the bright side, I know!

That’s a wrap for my TBD weekend report and this week promises to be even more exciting! No, I’m kidding I live a relatively boring life but we will see what I can squeeze out of this week.

The Pirate Bride Review

The Pirate Bride by Sandra Hill

  • Genre : Romance – Historical – Vikings
  • Date Started :  September 29, 2014
  • Date Finished : January 07, 2015

Description: You can read the full description from the Sandra Hill website. Let me sum it up for you. Lady pirate meets Handsome Viking due to her crew kidnapping him and his crew. He in turn kidnaps her and holds her hostage. His family comes to rescue him, her family comes to kidnap her and they all go to meet the king. True love prevails through lots of secrecy and stubbornness.

I’m not going to lie, I had high hopes for this book. I love Sandra Hill and she got me hooked on reading when I was in High School. Thork’s father’s book was the book that got me started and pulled into Viking Historical Romance genre. I had such high hopes for this book and I was extremely disappointed. I know what I’m getting into when I read a book like this. I expect things to be silly, comical, a quick read with characters that have over the top personalities and maybe a weak plot. This book was ridiculous, not very comical and the characters were too over the top. Generally a book like this will take me about a day or two to finish. Once I put this book down it took great strength to pick it up and continue. I NEEDED to finish it, to feel like I gave it a fair chance.

Neither Medana or Thork are likable characters. Medana didn’t seem like a strong enough character to lead a crew of female pirates, build a community on an island and keep all those woman safe. I respect her ability to bounce back from her horrible life and to take in all these other woman who had nowhere to go or who were in worse situations than she was but she didn’t seem to have that commanding presence. She just didn’t pull me into her love story.

Thork, oh egotistical and male chauvinist Thork, he is a gift to all woman. Estranged from his family he is ready to bite the bullet and get married. He is a caveman and not all too bright. Yes he, well his father, gets her out of a death sentence but he is so clueless. I know males in romance novels are not in touch with their feelings but the love story between Thork and Medana was far from believable.

Even in the silliest historical romance novel, I can ignore weak characters (SOMETIMES) as long as it has a strong love story, this one did not. I’m giving this book, The Pirate Bride by Sandra Hill a 1 star.

Cats, Dogs and Parties

You might see a few of these posts, strange posts about my dreams. I have a pretty active imagination and when I dream it can come out rather strange. Not all of my dreams are weird or strange, mostly they are vivid, realistic and random.

Last night I dreamt I took my dog out for a walk and she found a kitten. A tiny fur baby that she wanted to take home. I was not about to leave what looked like a few weeks old kitten out in the cold weather. So I picked up the kitten and walked the dog back to my house. All I could think about was, how the hell am I going to afford a cat and where will I put the kitty liter. Well within a few hours the kitten grew into an adult size cat so I invited all my neighbors over to see if someone had lost a kitten. My neighbors all came over and we had a party. Lots of people, lots of dogs and lots of cats. I don’t like parties and this one was rather strange, cats, dogs and people just hanging out together.

Then I woke up and I don’t even like cats all that much.

Tangled and Stumbling

I have been in a good head space for the last few years but I’m not sure what happened in 2014 but something changed. 2014 was not a pleasant year for me. Don’t get me wrong, it was not horrible and I’m not complaining. I just don’t want last year to continue into this year. Last year I gave up on myself and just stumbled along all year. My interests were non-existent and my ability to care about anything had obviously taken a vacation. That’s why I started this blog. I know that people who set new years resolutions get a bad rap because they tend to fall off the wagon around February and that is why I don’t like setting one. I do however like setting goals during the first of the year because the semi OCD part of me likes starting on the first month. Regardless of when I start, I have plans for this year. I don’t have the details ironed out yet but I do have a few goals I want to work on.

Goals for 2015

Work on Productivity – Last year I was LAZY, still am really. My house is looking like a episode of hoarders and I let lights stay unchanged for far too long. I’ll choose to stay home and watch Netflix all day instead of going to get groceries. I let my immediate emotional want overshadow my needs and that has to stop. This year I’m putting my needs before my emotional wants and I’m going to not let them influence what I need to do. This means doing projects around the house, fixing things, making sure I’m not scrambling for gifts or sending out cards late.

Read More – I read a lot as it is but I have a goal of 55 books to read this year. Like I said, last year was a lazy year and there were times when all I wanted to do was veg out in front of the TV. This year I’ll need to read a little more than 4 books a month. I hope book reviews is a good enough reason to keep me on track. 4 or more books a month, here I go!

All in all I’m planning on making 2015 a much better year!
